storyteller #02

Write the 'real story' behind an urban legend, myth, fairy tale, ghost story, wives' tale, folk lore or superstition.

They'd spent ages, planning something like this. Finally, the mannequin had arrived. It was almost frighteningly realistic: wrinkles, blue-rinse hair, if it hadn't been completely immobile, you would have believed it to be a real, live person.
That was what made it perfect for impersonating a dead person.
They'd rolled it up in a carpet (the legs and top of the head sticking out) and tied it to the roof of a car.
The shorter one had driven into a busy car park, got out of the car, and pretended to speak on a mobile.
"I know, she just dropped dead! Yeah. I'm going to go ask about coffins, what type of wood d'you think she'd have wanted?"
Everyone was staring at him, but he didn't falter. They wouldn't get another shot.
The taller one came along after he'd left, not so much later that everyone would have left, but late enough so that they'd started to dismiss the guy as a nutter.
Noone tried to stop him as he smashed his way into the car, and as he drove away, he smiled.
The world might not know their names, but it'd never forget them.
They were an urban legend.
